I love Karloff. I love him in the Frankenstein films. I love his reading of How the Grinch Stole Christmas. I love him in all of those classic black and white horror films. We forget that these movies were truly frightening in their day. Now they’re not all that scary: atmospheric and fun, but not the stuff of nightmares. I can only think of one exception, and that’s Tod Browning’s very disturbing Freaks. Man that ending gave me nightmares.
